Eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) is a cytotoxic protein secreted by eosinophil granulocytes upon activation. These immune cells are involved in the body's defense against parasites and also play a central role in allergic inflammation. ECP is released into the blood and other body fluids, where it can be measured as an indicator of eosinophil activity.
Elevated ECP levels may reflect ongoing eosinophil-driven inflammation, while normal levels suggest quiescent eosinophil function. The test is primarily used in the assessment of allergic diseases, such as bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and allergic rhinitis, as well as in monitoring response to anti-inflammatory therapy. Since ECP directly mirrors the activation state of eosinophils rather than just their number, it provides additional information beyond a simple eosinophil count.
The measurement is typically performed on a serum sample using an immunoassay. Reference ranges are lab-dependent, and results must be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms and other diagnostic findings.
