The absolute monocyte count (sometimes abbreviated AMC) measures the total number of monocytes in a given volume of blood, usually expressed as thousand cells per microliter (K/µL) or cells per microliter, with an SI equivalent of ×10⁹/L. Monocytes are white blood cells that form part of the innate immune system, helping to fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and clearing debris from damaged tissues.
This count is derived from the complete blood count (CBC) with differential and is more precise than the percentage because it provides the actual concentration of cells, avoiding misinterpretation when total white blood cell counts are abnormal.
