Tyrosine is a conditionally essential amino acid — the body can typically produce it from another amino acid, phenylalanine, through enzymatic conversion. It plays a critical role in the synthesis of several vital molecules: the catecholamine neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine), the thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine), and the skin pigment melanin.
Measurement of tyrosine in the blood (plasma or serum) is primarily used in the investigation of inherited metabolic disorders, most notably phenylketonuria (PKU) — in which phenylalanine cannot be converted to tyrosine, leading to low tyrosine levels — and various forms of tyrosinemia, where tyrosine accumulates to toxic levels due to enzyme deficiencies. The test may also be used to assess nutritional status in certain clinical contexts.
