Anti-CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide) antibodies are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly target the body's own citrullinated proteins. Citrullination is a normal process, but in susceptible individuals, these modified proteins can trigger an immune response, leading to the production of anti-CCP antibodies. These antibodies are strongly associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting joints and other tissues. The presence of anti-CCP is considered highly specific for RA, and testing for them helps distinguish RA from other types of arthritis.
Anti-CCP antibodies may be detectable years before clinical symptoms appear, making the test valuable for early diagnosis. Measuring anti-CCP levels also provides prognostic information, as high titers are often linked to more aggressive disease and joint damage. Unlike rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-CCP is less likely to be present in other autoimmune conditions, giving it greater diagnostic specificity.
