Arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6) is an essential omega-6 fatty acid that plays a key role in cell membrane structure and function. It is obtained from animal-based foods and also synthesized in the body from linoleic acid. Arachidonic acid is the precursor to a range of signaling molecules called eicosanoids, including prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are involved in inflammation, blood clotting, and immune responses.
Blood levels of arachidonic acid, typically expressed as a percentage of total fatty acids, are measured to evaluate fatty acid status, particularly in patients with cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disorders, or those undergoing dietary intervention.
