Creatinine is a chemical waste product generated from the normal breakdown of creatine, a compound found in muscle tissue that helps supply energy during physical activity. After production, creatinine enters the bloodstream and is transported to the kidneys, where it is filtered out and excreted in urine. Because the body produces creatinine at a relatively constant rate, blood levels serve as a useful indicator of kidney filtration ability.
The creatinine test is commonly used to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and to monitor chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, or other conditions affecting renal function.
