The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculated measure of kidney function. It estimates how much blood passes through the tiny filtering units of the kidneys (glomeruli) each minute, adjusted for body surface area. The CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) equation uses your serum creatinine level, age, sex, and sometimes cystatin C to compute this value, expressed in milliliters per minute per 1.73 square meters (mL/min/1.73 m²). It is more accurate than older formulas, especially at near-normal kidney function.
Healthcare providers use eGFR to screen for, diagnose, and monitor chronic kidney disease (CKD). A sustained eGFR below 60 mL/min/1.73 m² for 3 months or more indicates CKD, while values above 90 mL/min/1.73 m² are generally considered normal, though age-related decline is expected. The test is often ordered along with other kidney markers such as urine albumin to assess kidney health comprehensively.
