Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is a value calculated from hemoglobin and hematocrit, reported as part of a complete blood count (CBC). It represents the average concentration of hemoglobin inside red blood cells, expressed as a percentage or in grams per deciliter (g/dL). Unlike MCH, MCHC accounts for cell size, providing insight into the color and hemoglobin saturation of red cells.
MCHC is useful in classifying anemias—low values indicate hypochromia, while high values are seen in conditions like hereditary spherocytosis. It is routinely checked when evaluating general health, investigating causes of fatigue or pallor, or monitoring hematologic disorders.
