Procalcitonin (PCT) is a precursor protein to the hormone calcitonin, normally produced in the thyroid gland. In healthy individuals, circulating levels are extremely low, but during severe bacterial infections, particularly sepsis, many tissues in the body release large amounts of PCT into the bloodstream. This makes it a valuable biomarker for differentiating bacterial from viral infections and for monitoring the course of sepsis and the response to antibiotic therapy. Unlike C-reactive protein (CRP), PCT rises within a few hours of bacterial infection onset and falls quickly with effective treatment.
