Testosterone is a steroid hormone belonging to the androgen group. It is primarily produced in the testes in men and, to a lesser extent, in the ovaries in women and the adrenal glands in both sexes. Testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues and secondary sexual characteristics, such as increased muscle and bone mass, body hair growth, and deepening of the voice.
It also supports sperm production, sex drive, mood regulation, and overall energy levels. In women, testosterone contributes to ovarian function, bone strength, and libido. Measuring testosterone levels helps evaluate conditions like hypogonadism, infertility, menstrual irregularities, or signs of androgen excess.
