The test typically determines the amount of patient serum required to lyse 50% of a standardized preparation of rabbit erythrocytes, hence the name AP-50. It is primarily used to detect deficiencies or abnormalities in alternative pathway components, such as properdin, factor B, or factor D, which can predispose individuals to recurrent infections, particularly with Neisseria species.
