Anti-nucleosome antibodies are autoantibodies that attack nucleosomes, structures consisting of DNA wound around histone proteins. They are a subset of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and are considered highly sensitive for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), particularly during active disease. These antibodies can also appear in drug-induced lupus and, less commonly, in other autoimmune conditions.
Measuring anti-nucleosome antibodies, usually by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), helps clinicians evaluate suspected SLE or monitor disease activity. A positive result can support a diagnosis when clinical symptoms are present, though it is not used in isolation.
