Anti-Scl-70 antibodies, also known as anti-topoisomerase I antibodies, are a type of autoantibody that mistakenly attacks the body's own proteins. Specifically, they target topoisomerase I, an enzyme involved in DNA unwinding and repair. Testing for these antibodies is used in the evaluation of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause thickening and hardening of the skin and internal organs.
The presence of anti-Scl-70 antibodies is strongly associated with diffuse cutaneous scleroderma and may indicate a higher risk of interstitial lung disease. This test aids clinicians in confirming a diagnosis and assessing disease subtype.
