Borrelia IgM antibodies are immunoglobulin M proteins directed against Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochete responsible for Lyme disease. They are detectable in blood serum and are among the first antibodies to appear after infection, usually within a few weeks. Testing for Borrelia IgM is commonly used to aid in the early diagnosis of Lyme disease, especially when a person presents with symptoms such as erythema migrans rash or early neurological signs.
Because IgM antibodies can persist for months and may cross-react with other pathogens, results are interpreted alongside clinical findings and often confirmed with additional tests.
