C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein made by the liver in response to signals from the immune system. Its levels rise quickly when there is inflammation anywhere in the body, such as from an infection, injury, or chronic inflammatory disease. Because CRP can increase within hours of an inflammatory trigger and fall as inflammation resolves, it is a valuable marker for detecting and tracking inflammation.
The CRP-Latex test is a sensitive quantitative method that uses latex particles coated with anti-CRP antibodies to measure even low amounts of CRP in the blood. Clinicians often request this test to help evaluate unexplained symptoms like fever, pain, or fatigue, or to monitor conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, infections, or inflammatory bowel disease.
