Erythroblasts, also known as nucleated red blood cells (NRBC), are the precursor cells of red blood cells (erythrocytes). They are normally found in the bone marrow, where they mature and eventually lose their nucleus to become mature erythrocytes that enter the bloodstream. In healthy adults, erythroblasts are rarely detected in peripheral blood.
The measurement of erythroblasts is part of a differential blood count. Detecting these cells in the blood can help evaluate conditions that affect red blood cell production, such as severe anemia, bone marrow disorders, or intense physical stress. It may also be used to monitor certain diseases or treatments.
