Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a signaling protein (cytokine) produced primarily by activated immune cells such as macrophages. It plays a central role in the body’s inflammatory response, helping to trigger fever, stimulate the production of other inflammatory mediators, and activate lymphocytes. Because IL-1β is a key driver of inflammation, blood levels are sometimes measured in the evaluation of chronic inflammatory disorders, autoinflammatory syndromes, and certain infections. However, IL-1β testing is less common in routine clinical practice and is often reserved for specialist settings or research.
