Intestinal Fatty Acid Binding Protein (I-FABP) is a small protein found almost exclusively in the enterocytes lining the small intestine. When these cells are injured, I-FABP is rapidly released into the bloodstream, where it can be measured as a biomarker for gut mucosal damage. Its measurement is useful in conditions where intestinal integrity is a concern, such as mesenteric ischemia, necrotizing enterocolitis, or inflammatory bowel disease. Because I-FABP rises quickly after injury, it may provide an early signal of intestinal distress before other clinical signs appear.
