The Omega-3 Index measures the proportion of two key omega-3 fatty acids—eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—in red blood cell membranes, expressed as a percentage of total fatty acids. Because red blood cells have a lifespan of about 120 days, this index provides a stable picture of dietary omega-3 intake over the preceding months.
EPA and DHA are known to support cardiovascular function, normal inflammatory responses, and brain health. Measuring the Omega-3 Index helps assess whether a person’s intake of these marine-derived fatty acids is sufficient. An index of 8% or higher is generally considered optimal for cardiovascular health, although reference ranges are lab-dependent (typically 8–12%).
