Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an antibody that binds to the Fc region of other antibodies (IgG). While its exact physiological role is not fully understood, it is often found in the blood of people with autoimmune diseases, most notably rheumatoid arthritis. The immune system normally protects against invaders, but in certain conditions it may produce RF, which can form immune complexes and cause inflammation in joints and other tissues.
Measuring RF is a common part of the diagnostic workup for rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions. However, RF is not specific to any one disease: it can also be elevated in other autoimmune disorders (like Sjögren’s syndrome), chronic infections, and even in some healthy individuals, particularly as they age. Therefore, RF results are interpreted alongside other tests such as anti-CCP antibodies and clinical symptoms.
