Standard base excess (SBE), also called base excess, is a calculated value from blood gas analysis that estimates the amount of strong acid or base needed to restore blood pH to normal under standard conditions. It focuses on the metabolic component of acid-base balance, excluding respiratory influences.
SBE is commonly measured in arterial or venous blood gas tests to evaluate patients with suspected metabolic acidosis or alkalosis. A negative SBE (base deficit) suggests metabolic acidosis, possibly due to conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney disease, or severe diarrhea. A positive SBE indicates metabolic alkalosis, which may arise from vomiting, diuretic use, or excessive bicarbonate intake.
