Free copper, also known as non-ceruloplasmin-bound copper, is the portion of total serum copper not attached to the protein ceruloplasmin. Normally, most copper is tightly bound to ceruloplasmin and is not toxic. Free copper is potentially harmful and can contribute to oxidative stress. It is typically calculated by subtracting ceruloplasmin-bound copper from total serum copper. Elevated free copper is a hallmark of Wilson's disease, a condition where the body cannot properly excrete copper, leading to its accumulation in the liver, brain, and other organs.
