Fusobacterium species are bacteria commonly found in the oral cavity but normally present only in very low numbers in a healthy intestine. Quantitative stool testing for Fusobacterium spp. measures the bacterial load, typically in CFU per gram of stool, to detect overgrowth. This marker is relevant because certain species, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum, have been linked to gut dysbiosis and disease.
Elevated Fusobacterium levels in stool may indicate an imbalance in the gut microbiome and are associated with inflammation and digestive symptoms. Research has shown increased Fusobacterium abundance in conditions like ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and colorectal cancer, where F. nucleatum can be found in tumor tissue. Testing is used to support clinical assessment, not as a standalone diagnostic.
