Magnesium is an essential mineral that the body needs for numerous physiological processes. It acts as a cofactor for more than 300 enzyme systems, supporting muscle and nerve function, regulating heartbeat, maintaining bone strength, and aiding in protein, DNA, and RNA synthesis. The majority of magnesium is stored in bones and soft tissues; only about 1% circulates in the blood.
A magnesium blood test (usually serum magnesium) is ordered to evaluate magnesium status, often when there are symptoms of deficiency such as muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat, or neurological complaints. It is also used to monitor conditions that affect magnesium balance, such as kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, or diuretic use.
