Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is a chemical messenger primarily known for its roles in the central nervous system, where it influences mood, sleep, appetite, and pain perception. However, about 90% of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut and stored in platelets, where it aids in blood clotting and gastrointestinal motility.
A blood serotonin test is typically used to help diagnose carcinoid syndrome, a condition caused by certain neuroendocrine tumors that overproduce serotonin. It may also be assessed in the evaluation of certain mental health or functional gastrointestinal disorders. Because most blood serotonin is contained within platelets, the test reflects platelet serotonin content rather than free circulating serotonin.
For this reason, results can be influenced by conditions that affect platelet count or function. The test is usually performed on a serum sample, and it is important to follow any dietary or medication restrictions provided by your healthcare provider, as certain foods and drugs can alter serotonin levels.
