VO2 max, or maximal oxygen consumption, represents the peak amount of oxygen your body can transport and utilize during exhaustive physical effort. Measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min), it reflects the integrated capacity of the lungs, heart, blood, and muscles to deliver and use oxygen for energy production. VO2 max is widely considered the gold standard for assessing cardiorespiratory fitness and aerobic endurance.
The measurement is performed during a graded exercise test, usually on a treadmill or cycle ergometer, where exercise intensity increases until you reach exhaustion. It is used to evaluate athletic performance, guide training programs, and assess overall health. A low VO2 max may indicate reduced physical fitness or, in some cases, suggest underlying mitochondrial dysfunction or cardiovascular limitations.
